The Catamount School is a public school offering grade 6-8 and located on the campus of Smoky Mountain High School and operated by Western Carolina University. Opened in 2017, the Catamount School is one of two “lab schools” in operation in the state of North Carolina, following a legislative mandate for all UNC system schools with teacher training programs, who also serve NC counties with students at academic risk, to open a lab school. The school accepts up to 75 students who are Jackson County residents, are enrolled in a low performing school, or did not meet expected growth in the prior school year based on one of the following indicators: a. Grades; b. Observations; c. Diagnostic and formative assessments; d. State assessments; or e. Other factors, including reading on grade level.
