H377 - 2026 Court Changes. (Ratified)

Session Year 2024

Overview: Section 21 of House Bill 377 would have modified the statute governing the rotation and assignment of superior court judges to create a new assignment rule for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

In assigning superior court judges for a district consisting of at least one county with a population over 1,000,000 people, the Chief Justice would have been required to include superior court judges from (i) other districts in that same judicial division and (ii) districts from any judicial division adjacent to the division with the district consisting of at least one county with a population over 1,000,000.

House Bill 377 was ratified by the General Assembly on August 6, 2026, but vetoed by the Governor on August 17, 2026, and is not current law. If the General Assembly overrides the veto, Section 21 of House Bill 377 would become effective January 1, 2027, and apply to rotations on or after that date.
