S257 - 2026 Appropriations Act. (SL 2026-41)

Session Year 2024

Overview: Section 7.6 of S.L. 2026-41 (Senate Bill 257) provides the State Board of Education (SBE) with flexibility to adopt the requirements for administrator licenses by creating a new principal license distinct from the administrator license. The requirements for the principal license are defined in statute, but the requirements for the administrator license are left up to the SBE.

The requirements for the principal license are identical to the previous requirements for administrator licenses, including that the individual must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Hold a bachelor's degree.
  • Have successfully completed an approved principal preparation program.
  • Have at least four years of experience as a licensed professional educator.
  • Have submitted a portfolio to the State Board of Education (SBE) for approval that meets criteria adopted by the SBE.

Additionally, this section makes various conforming changes to account for the new principal license.

This section became effective July 7, 2026, and applies to applicants for licensure on or after that date.
