Overview: Section 7.27 of S.L. 2026-41 (Senate Bill 257) requires that the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) ensure that a dyslexia screening instrument is administered to every child participating in the NC Pre-K program. The results of these screenings must be shared with the child's kindergarten teacher at the beginning of the following school year. DPI must also provide training to educators and administrators working with children in the NC Pre-K program to ensure appropriate instruction and intervention strategies are used with children who exhibit potential indicators of dyslexia.
This section became effective July 1, 2026, and applies beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.
