S257 - 2026 Appropriations Act. (SL 2026-41)

Overview: Section 7.32 of S.L. 2026-41 (Senate Bill 257) requires all public school units (PSUs) to implement the guidelines adopted by the State Board of Education (SBE) for developing and implementing an individual diabetes care plan for a student with diabetes and make information and professional development resources available to all school personnel to appropriately support a student with diabetes and implement a student's individual diabetes care plan.

Additionally, PSUs must annually provide parents and guardians with the following information:

  • A description of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
  • A description of the risk factors and warning signs associated with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
  • A recommendation that parents or guardians consult with a student's primary care provider if the student displays the warning signs associated with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
  • A description of the screening process for diagnosing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
  • A description of the stages of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
  • A recommendation that the parent or guardian of a student receiving a diabetes diagnosis consult with the student's primary care provider to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
  • A notification that the student's school is required to assist students with diabetes by implementing the SBE's guidelines for developing and implementing individual diabetes care plans.

This section became effective July 1, 2026.
