S355 - Support the Dept. of Adult Correction. (SL 2026-44)

Overview: Section 1.1 of S.L. 2026-44 (Senate Bill 355) requires constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina and community colleges to waive tuition for the following relatives of a probation officer who sustains a traumatic injury in the line of duty:

  • Survivors, if the officer is killed as a direct result of the injury.
  • Spouse, if the officer is permanently and totally disabled as a direct result of the injury.
  • Children between the ages of 17 and 24, if the officer is permanently and totally disabled as a direct result of the injury. Each child's eligibility is limited to (i) 54 months for a baccalaureate degree or (ii) the number of months required to complete the educational program.

This section became effective July 7, 2026, and applies to waivers of tuition granted on or after that date.
