Overview: Part VI of S.L. 2026-19 (Senate Bill 153) prohibits constituent institutions of The University of North Carolina from having policies or regulations that limit the enforcement of federal immigration laws to less than the full extent permitted by federal law. Constituent institutions cannot (i) prevent law enforcement officials or agencies from gathering information on an individual's immigration status or (ii) prevent the communication of that information to federal law enforcement agencies.
Senate Bill 153 was vetoed by the Governor on June 20, 2025, and that veto was overridden by the General Assembly on June 24, 2026.
This section became effective June 24, 2026.
