A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT to provide that regular municipal elections in the city of mount airy shall be held in even‑numbered years.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. The Charter of the City of Mount Airy, being Section 1 of S.L. 2003‑281, reads as rewritten:
"Section 3.1. Regular
Municipal Elections. Regular municipal elections shall be held in each odd‑numbered
even‑numbered year in accordance with the uniform municipal
election laws of North Carolina. The Mayor and the Board shall be elected by
the nonpartisan primary and election method as provided in G.S. 163‑279(a)(3)
and G.S. 163‑294. method in accordance with Chapter 163 of
the General Statutes. Board members shall be elected by all the qualified
voters of the City and shall reside in the wards they represent.
"Section 3.2. Election of
Mayor. A Mayor shall be elected in the regular municipal election in 2005
2022 and quadrennially thereafter.
"Section 3.3. Election of
Commissioners. The Commissioners serving on the date of ratification of
this Charter shall serve until the expiration of their terms or until their
successors are elected and qualified. In the 2003 2024 election
and quadrennially thereafter, three commissioners shall be elected, the
Commissioner‑at‑Large, one commissioner representing the North Ward
for the term then expiring, and one commissioner representing the South Ward
for the term then expiring. In the 2005 2022 election and
quadrennially thereafter, two commissioners shall be elected, one commissioner
representing the North Ward for the term then expiring, and one commissioner
representing the South Ward for the term then expiring."
SECTION 2. The terms of office of the Mayor and all Commissioners serving on the effective date of this act shall be extended by one year.
SECTION 3. This act is effective when it becomes law and applies to elections held on or after that date.
