A JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND MEMORY OF ADOLPH LORENZ DIAL, FORMER MEMBER OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY.

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial was born in the Prospect Community of Robeson County, North Carolina, on December 12, 1922, to Noah Dial and Mary Ellen Moore Dial; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial graduated from Prospect High School in 1939 and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1943, and received graduate degrees from Boston University in 1953 and 1956; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial served as professor and professor emeritus of history at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he was the founder and chair of the American Indian Studies Department; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial worked for the betterment of his community through membership on various boards, including the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke; as founder, member, and chair of the Board of Directors of the Robeson County Church and Community Center; as charter member and chair of the Board of Directors of the Lumbee Regional Development Association; as a lifetime member of the Board of Directors of the Robeson Historical Drama, "Strike at the Wind"; and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lumbee Guaranty Bank; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial was a member of the Congressional Committee for Indian Policy Review from 1975 through 1977, and served on the Board of Directors of the American Indian Historical Society; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial showed outstanding devotion to public service, having served as a member of the House of Representatives during the 1991 Session of the General Assembly and as a member of the Pembroke Town Council during the 1950s; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations, and was awarded six battle stars; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial rendered distinguished service to the religious life of his community as a lifelong member of the Prospect United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Jefferson Award in 1983, and Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1984, and from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1988; and

Whereas, Adolph Lorenz Dial died on December 24, 1995, leaving to mourn his wife, Harriet Caligan Dial; his daughter, Mary Doris Dial Caple and her husband Frank; his sisters, Grace D. Locklear and Rosa B. Woods; Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

Section 1.  The General Assembly honors the memory of Adolph Lorenz Dial and extends the gratitude and appreciation of this State and its citizens for his life and devoted service to this State and his community.

Section 2.  The General Assembly expresses its deepest sympathy to the family of Adolph Lorenz Dial for the loss of this distinguished citizen.

Section 3.  The Secretary of State shall transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the family of Adolph Lorenz Dial.

Section 4.  This resolution is effective upon ratification.
