A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT allowing certified professional midwives to provide Certain midwifery services without being subject to criminal penalty.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Chapter 90 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new Article to read:

"Article 10B.

"Practice of Midwifery by Certified Professional Midwives.

"§ 90-178.10.  Practice of midwifery by certified professional midwife.

Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, any person who is certified as a Certified Professional Midwife by the North American Registry of Midwives may provide prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care as defined in G.S. 90-178.2, in accordance with the Standards for Practice of the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives."

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective July 1, 2014.
