HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 1051

 

 

A JOINT RESOLUTION honoring the life and memory of linda P. johnson, former member of the general assembly.

 

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson was born on May 2, 1945, in Cabarrus County, to the late Donald and Ruth Smith Pennell; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson attended Cabarrus County public schools, graduating from A.L. Brown High School in 1963, where she was a member of the varsity basketball and cheerleading teams; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson furthered her education and became a computer analyst; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson was a lifelong advocate for K‑12 education, serving eight years on the Kannapolis City Schools Board of Education between 1992 through 2000, where she sought to improve educational opportunities for children in her community; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson served with honor and distinction in the General Assembly as a member of the House of Representatives for 10 terms between 2001 and 2020; and

Whereas, during her service in the General Assembly, Linda P. Johnson made contributions as a member of numerous committees, including Commerce and Job Development; Finance; Insurance; Public Utilities; and Rules, Calendar, and Operations of the House. She was a senior chair of the Appropriations Committee and cochair of the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee. One of her greatest accomplishments was aiding the establishment of the North Carolina Research Campus, a public health research facility in Kannapolis; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson was actively involved in North Kannapolis Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a supporter of the Dixie Youth Baseball program in Kannapolis; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson was respected, admired, and loved by those who knew her and had the privilege to work with her; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson passed away on February 18, 2020; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson was preceded in death by her son, Ben Johnson, and her brother, David Pennell; and

Whereas, Linda P. Johnson is survived by her husband of 56 years, Ronnie R. Johnson; sons, Roger Johnson and Byron Johnson; grandchildren, Regan Johnson, Linzi Johnson, Sawyer Johnson, Wesley Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Sydney Johnson, and Chloe Johnson; and daughter‑in‑law, Lori Johnson; Now, therefore,

 

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

 

SECTION 1.  The General Assembly recognizes and expresses its appreciation for the life of former member Representative Linda P. Johnson and her dedication to her community and the State of North Carolina.

SECTION 2.  The General Assembly extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Linda P. Johnson for the loss of a beloved family member.

SECTION 3.  The Secretary of State shall transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the family of Linda P. Johnson.

SECTION 4.  This resolution is effective upon ratification.
