RESOLUTION 55

HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 1192

 

 

A JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING THE ROCKY MOUNT SENIOR HIGH BLACKBIRDS AS CHAMPIONS OF THE STATE CLASS 4-A BASEBALL LEAGUE.

 

WHEREAS, on Saturday, May 27, 1967, despite the handicaps of a sore-armed pitcher, a crippled first baseman and a catcher who was injured during the course of the game and was forced to sit on the bench a few innings, the Blackbirds of Rocky Mount Senior High by a score of 4 to 1 proved themselves indeed to be the State Class 4-A champs; and

WHEREAS, the courage and sportsmanship of the Blackbirds has been demonstrated similarly in every game this season; and

WHEREAS, due to the fine coaching of Dale Tompkins, the Blackbirds had a fine season which thrilled the Rocky Mount crowds who turned out for the games; and

WHEREAS, the Blackbirds were sparked in their winning game by the fine pitching of Sonny Robinson, the great hitting and inspirational leadership of injured first baseman Gus Roberson and the fine plays of right fielder Tommy Cox, second baseman Doug Roberson, left fielder Hargrove, Tony Bossolono in center field, Tommy Rackley at third base and Tony Davis at shortstop. Coaching services were rendered in fine manner by Butch Barbee and the injured Frank Layton; and

WHEREAS, these boys and their coach bring honor to the City of Rocky Mount and by their fine attitude, sportsmanship and example cause their State to be genuinely proud:

 

Now, therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives , the Senate concurring:

 

Section 1.  That the Blackbirds of Rocky Mount Senior High are to be commended and honored by all North Carolinians.

Sec. 2.  That a copy of this Resolution be duly certified by the Secretary of State and sent to Rocky Mount Senior High School.

Sec. 3.  This Resolution shall become effective upon its adoption.

In the General Assembly read three times and ratified, this the 31st day of May, 1967.
